In nearly 25 years of presence in Burundi, we saw the practice of judo largely evolving in the country. In the sixties, judo was established by Belgian co-operators of which some are still present on the spot.
As in many African countries, an old tradition of fight had prepared a favorable ground for Judo which quickly became a sharp success. Limited in its rise because of the lack of infrastructures and literally struck down by the long years of civil war, judo however never died and a small team of impassioned people continued to maintain the flame.
This is from this small group of people that all set out again in the nighties.
Today, the main aim of all our action is dedicated to the structuring of the sporting practice in the country in order to get all the structures necessary to achieve the social development goals through sport that we trust in.
It is clear that today Burundi cannot claim being present on international podiums (continental or world), actually this is not an objective. On the other hand, to take part in national competitions, continental and world wide championships is important so that the Burundian judo can be recognized internationally.
